The Best of Britain Summer House Party
June 28 to July 2, 2009
5 days half board
£249pp

When it comes to beautiful Britain, Chester is one of the jewels in the crown, ranking alongside the cities of London, York, Bath and Edinburgh for architectural and historic interest. Founded by the Romans more than 2,000 years ago, Chester proudly shows much of that heritage and the city walls are the most complete Roman remains in Britain. Despite so much history and heritage, Chester is a vibrant, dynamic city full of bars, pubs, clubs, hotels and restaurants.
York is renowned for its exquisite architecture, tangle of quaint cobbled streets and the iconic York Minster. Delve into the city’s vibrant café culture, take time out to enjoy some of the country’s most talented street entertainers or simply watch the world go by while sipping a drink by the river.
Windermere in the Lake District is England’s largest lake. Ambleside - just half a mile north of the lake - is a bustling town full of tea shops and restaurants.
Portmeirion is an Italianate resort village in Gwynedd, on the Snowdonian coast of Wales. It was constructed between 1925 and 1975 by the architect Sir Clough Williams-Ellis incorporated fragments of demolished buildings, including works by a number of other architects. Portmeirion’s architectural bricolage and deliberately fanciful nostalgia provided an unusual and distinctive backdrop to the TV series ‘The Prisoner’ which was filmed in the village in 1966 and 67. The grounds contain an important collection of rhododendrons and other exotic plants in a wild-garden setting.
